Pumpkins that are chosen for carving purposes need to be firm to the touch and have no soft areas that are seen or felt. Always check under the bottom of any pumpkin to make sure that the area does not have discoloration present. Having a stem can add character and charm to the pumpkin face patterns you make, but it this is not a “must have” feature.
